Coronavirus Update: Closure of Licensed Premises
The government has temporarily relaxed the rules on off sales to permit licensed premises to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises if not already covered by the existing licence government guidance.
On 9 July the government announced further assessments of the current COVID-19 restrictions with the aim of further relaxing restrictions on business that can reopen.
Reopening of businesses and venues from 11 and 13 July
The following businesses are permitted in law to reopen from Saturday 11 July as outlined in the table below with links to guidance to ensure their safe reopening:
- outdoor swimming pools and outdoor water parks
The following businesses which had to remain closed in law will be permitted to reopen from Monday 13 July as outlined in the table below with links to guidance to ensure their safe reopening:
- spas
- nail bars and salons and beauty salons
- tanning booths and salons
- massage parlours
- tattoo parlours
- body and skin piercing services

What needs to be licensed?
We are responsible for licensing premises that are used for licensable activities. These activities are:

the sale of alcohol by retail

the supply of alcohol by or on behalf of a club to members and guests
-
regulated entertainment
-
late night refreshment.
We licence these activities to:

prevent crime and disorder
-
ensure public safety
-
protect children from harm
-
prevent public nuisance.
What is regulated entertainment?
Regulated entertainment covers a range of activities including some:

dance performances
-
plays
-
screening of films
-
indoor sporting events
-
boxing or wrestling entertainment (indoors or outdoors)

live music performances
-
playing of recorded music.

What is late night refreshment?
Late night refreshment is hot food or drink supplied to members of the public, on or from any premises, for consumption on or off the premises, between 11pm and 5am.
Are outdoor venues covered?
Yes. Premises refers to any place, inside or out, on private or public land, including vehicles and ‘vessels or moveable structures’ (eg marquees).
