Following the government’s announcement that non-essential shops can begin reopening from Monday 15 June 2020, we have been preparing new plans and measures to enable people to visit the town centres safely. We will use a £157,000 government grant to kick-start the work on getting our local economy moving again, whilst implementing social distancing measures.
We have been working closely with local businesses, town councils, Federation of Small Businesses, Chamber of Commerce as well as engaging with Cambridgeshire County Council Highways to prepare for a 'new normal' look in Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots and Ramsey town centres.
Priority areas will be places with narrow footpaths and busy pedestrian areas, with over 100 new signs and environmentally friendly floor markers that will act as visible safety measures to visitors. Enhanced cleaning measures will also be undertaken by the Street Cleaning Team.
Executive Leader of Huntingdonshire District Council, Cllr Ryan Fuller said "Supporting local businesses in whatever way we can as a local authority remains a key priority – with action plans for each of our markets towns being drawn up for the public to be able to see exactly what the district council is implementing, so they can feel confident that town centres are safe to visit again.
